Why Getting Out Keeps You Well

How small adventures make a big difference as we age

Getting older does not mean life should shrink to four walls, a favourite chair and daytime television. In fact, staying well often depends on doing the opposite - getting out, seeing different places and having something to look forward to.

For many older people, the biggest barrier is not interest, it is transport. That is where a service like SteadyGo comes in, turning “I’d love to, but…” into “Yes, I can go.”

(Opinion - this is the single biggest shift we see – from stuck to mobile.)

Better for bodies

Light movement – getting to the vehicle, walking a short way, transferring safely, looking around – all keeps joints, muscles and balance working.

Regular outings can help to -

  • Maintain strength and stability

  • Reduce stiffness from sitting all day

  • Support better sleep at night

  • Keep daily routines more active and structured

It does not need to be intense exercise. A gentle wander around a garden, a stretch at a café stop, or a few steps to a lookout can make a real difference.

SteadyGo’s role is to make that movement safe and achievable - wheelchair-accessible vehicles, trained drivers, help with steps, patience with mobility aids and enough time so no one feels rushed.

Better for minds and mood

Seeing the same four walls every day can be quietly depressing. New sights, sounds and conversations wake the brain up.

Getting out regularly can -

  • Lift mood and reduce feelings of anxiety or low spirits

  • Stimulate memory and conversation (“Do you remember when…”)

  • Give people something positive to anticipate

  • Break up long, lonely weeks with small highlights

Many passengers say the outing starts feeling good well before they get on the vehicle. Having a date on the calendar, choosing what to wear, telling family or friends – all of that adds to a sense of purpose.

Better for connection and confidence

One of the most serious health risks for older people is loneliness. A simple trip can be a powerful antidote.

On a SteadyGo excursion, people are -

  • Greeted by name

  • Helped into the vehicle with care and respect

  • Able to chat with the driver and fellow passengers if they wish

  • Treated as guests, not “jobs on a list”

Over time, faces become familiar, quiet passengers often open up and a sense of belonging grows. Confidence tends to follow. When people know they will be looked after, they are more willing to try new places again.

Better for independence and dignity

Transport is often the tipping point between independence and dependence. If you cannot safely drive, cannot manage standard public transport and do not want to “be a nuisance” to family, it is easy to simply stay home.

A dedicated mobility service restores some of that independence -

  • You choose which outings appeal

  • You travel on your own terms, with your mobility needs understood

  • You do not have to lean on family and friends every time you want to go somewhere

A big part of wellbeing in later life is feeling that you still have choices. Reliable, respectful transport is a practical way to protect that dignity.

How SteadyGo makes it easier

For many older people and their families, the biggest worries about getting out are safety, comfort and “what if something goes wrong”.

SteadyGo is set up to answer those concerns -

  • Mobility-aware drivers who understand wheelchairs, walkers and slower movement

  • Wheelchair-accessible vehicles with hoists and securements

  • Help from door to door where needed, not just “kerbside only”

  • Planned, gentle itineraries with breaks, toilets and seating built into the day

  • Clear communication about timing, pick-up points and what to expect

(Opinion - getting out should feel like a supported adventure, not a stressful military operation.)

What this series will cover

This first article sets the scene - getting out is not a luxury for older people, it is a health strategy.

In the rest of the SteadyGo series, we will explore -

  • Mood, motivation and beating the blues

  • Moving gently and staying strong

  • Friends, laughter and belonging

  • New places and sharper thinking

  • Giving family carers a break

  • The different types of excursions SteadyGo offers and how we look after you on each one

For now, the key message is simple - saying “yes” to getting out is one of the kindest things you can do for your health, or for someone you care about.

SteadyGo is here to make that “yes” possible, safe and enjoyable – trip by trip.
